New Survey Instrument for the Measurement of Digital Stress: The Digital Stressors Scale (DSS)

New survey instrument to measure digital stress presented: The Digital Stressors Scale (DSS)

In a recent publication, Dr. Thomas Fischer and his colleagues Dr. Martin Reuter (University of Bonn) and Dr. René Riedl (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria and JKU) have presented a new survey instrument to measure digital stress. The new instrument comprises 50 questions which ask individuals about their perceptions of stress caused directly or indirectly by digital technologies at work. These 50 questions are arranged in 10 categories, which reflect specific stressors, including:

  • Complexity of technology
  • Conflicts between work and private life
  • Job insecurity
  • Privacy of technology use
  • Overload
  • Technology safety
  • Pressure from the social environment
  • Lack of technical support
  • Lack of technology usefulness
  • Technology unreliability

The new instrument was tested with a sample of 1,998 individuals representative of the employed population in the USA. The article and the new survey instrument are now available in a new open access article published in the journal “Frontiers of Psychology” titled: The Digital Stressors Scale: Development and Validation of a New Survey Instrument to Measure Digital Stress Perceptions in the Workplace Context.
